The Party Plan

Image
Hey bloggg. We are back and ready to go in depth with out party plan!! This plan is especially fun and awesome as it lays down the details for our filming process of our short film. WOOO. So excited. Okay enough chitter chatter, let’s begin.  Last week my group and I discussed how we wanted to begin filming. Thankfully our group is super easy going with not too tight of schedules so deciding how we want to plan was quite easy. We're planning on filming either next week or the week after. We figured that getting a jump on our video would be more beneficial as it leaves us with more time to edit and make any changes. Not to mention that we already know exactly where we're going to film and how we're going to execute the scenes. We're going to film our short movie at Jenna's house because her house meets in the middle of all the group members. She also has parks and stores nearby just in case we decide to film a scene in that type of setting.  The only people that wou

Short film research: (Whittling Away/Mystery)

Image
The murder mystery, short film, we chose was called whittling away. This film features, a father, a grandmother, and a daughter. To start the scene, the daughter is shown at a deserted lake, which creates a suspenseful theme for the murder mystery. This is a great way to create engagement for the audience. The short film progresses to a snippet of the girl drawing blood into the lake. The girl despaired for almost the whole duration of the short film until the plot twist at the end. The use of diegetic sound creates an outside scene for the characters. Our film will also use diegetic sound to create a scene. As well as no diegetic sound for our credit scene. Just like the short film Party to Murder, “the whittling away” there is a plot twist. This strategy is a great example of the other ways how to execute one for our film. In the editing of this short film, it goes back and forth between the daughter's and father's points of view. If our group decided to do this for our fil

Short film research: (Party To Murder, Mystery)

Image
The mystery short film we watched was Party to Murder by Strobe Studios. The actors gathered together at this old-style mansion to play a game of murder mystery while at a masked party. Will they play a harmless game or is the reality of death knocking on their front door? The director included a plot twist which is what ultimately made the short film a good watch. At the beginning of the film the director used upbeat music and close-up angles of a couple dressed in fancy attire. The upbeat music explained the mood of the couple, as they were laughing and excited for their upcoming party. However, as the car approached the home the music took a turn for the dark. The music began to speed up and the musical notes selection became very ominous. A big tactic used in mysteries especially murder mysteries in plot twists. Plot twists leave the audience highly surprised making it the best way to recapture a viewer's attention. Nobody wants to sit through a movie where every scene is eas

Short film research: (The Vision, Mystery)

Image
Throughout the Mystery short film, The Vision, a boy is looking for his friend through a fever dream and never ends up finding out if his friend is ok or not. There were common sounds like creepy music playing in the background. The lighting throughout the short film was very dark and eerie. The boy's bedroom as well as all the settings that were shown throughout the film were dark and made a viewer feel uncomfortable. A common editing tactic in the mystery genre is foreshadowing which means early in the film, a hint is given as to what is going to happen in the plot. Another common tactic is suspense. Suspense is built through ending scenes with cliffhangers, making a character complicated, intense point of view, and hints as to what is to come throughout the film.  I really enjoy the suspenseful part about mystery genre films. Throughout all mystery films, there is so much suspense built up because you truly want to know what happened and why it is happening. This question is n

Short film reasearch: ( The Last Note/Mystery)

Image
Hey blogg. Today we will be discussing an award-winning mystery short film called "The Last Note" and pointing out different features within this film. For some background, the film begins with David driving to the lake while talking about leaving his wife and all his problems with her. Then David is seen with a body bag which is Catherine and dumps her in a lake. He does this due to catching her cheating on him the night before. Once David returns home, he starts drinking liquor while reading a book named Murder. In the book, there is a note from Catherine and as he reads to there are flashbacks to her putting poison in the bottle. He then realizes as she writes “Sorry I had to do this, goodbye David” and he passes away. To begin the sound purely consisted of voice-overs from both Catherine and David, the former husbands and wife, along with sound effects. In specific, dramatic sound effects were used which is very common within mystery short films. Common CAMs in mystery bl

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Before researching these two films we didn't realize how similar the two storylines were. We were distracted by the use of still images compared to video sequences to notice the plot. After watching “La Jetee vs 12 Monkeys… which is better?” I see that both films explore the idea of time travel and the consequences of your actions. La Jetee does this through the use of images to tell this provoking story. When creating our own short films we can take these to films and use them as inspiration. We want to incorporate more complex ideas that leave the audience thinking. I think the goal of our short film is to really throw the audience off track almost like a plot twist. We could maybe even incorporate the idea of a natural disaster just like La Jetee and 12 Monkeys. After watching the two films we also took the video style into consideration for our film. The La Jetee images are black and white so the film has an older, more dark feeling to it. For the 12 Monkeys film, certain cli

How to make a short film

Image
Hey Blog. This blog will discuss and evaluate the procedure of putting together a short film. The first important factor in starting the process of making a short film is identifying your budget. Understanding how much Knowing how many people will work with you and who will be a part of your cast is involved with the budget. This is very important to know to write up a plan for filming. Starting to write out a filming plan with the budget in mind is highly important. Knowing how much money can be sent and what resources are available to you plays a part in the budget and essentially the whole film. Smaller casts are usually common for shot films so keeping that in the plans is important. Knowing big fancy scenes like explosions can't be done because short films usually have limited money and resources. This makes creativity a highly important factor. A lso, sh ort films typically have a shorter duration than feature-length films, often ranging from a few minutes to around 30 minute

Comparing 9, the short film, and the full-length movie

Image
Hey Blogg, our group will be discussing the short version of the film "9" and the full-length version along with comparing both of them.  Short film version: None of our group members had ever seen this movie and seeing it for the first time it was different, unlike something we had ever seen before. First off, there was no dialogue throughout the whole film. This causes us to pay even more attention to what was happening throughout the film to better understand what was going on. For this specific short film, the plot was less obvious and required higher thinking skills as all that is given are the scenes. We understood the plot at the nearing the end of the movie. Our interpretation of the plot was  that i n a desolate setting that looked like a landfill site, the film begins with scenes of 9 crafting objects from scrap metal. As the title screen fades, 9 is found sitting around the remnants of a broken world, wiping a green glowing metal contraption. Lost in reflection, h
